Oh, hello there. While we’re all busy in Knoxville getting ready for November’s return of the Scruffy City Comedy Festival, there is still a lot of great comedy to enjoy here in the pumpkin spice-flavored month of October.
Over the course of the next couple of weeks here are some great shows I’ll get to be a part of here in Knoxville:
Monday, October 19 — QED Experimental Comedy Lab — “Correct Me if I’m Wrong” (Facebook event page)
Tonight’s show has a game show theme. What will be doing? We have no idea. The show’s host, Matt Chadourne, will surprise us all when we get there. QED shows continue to be one of my favorite experiences in my young comedy career. They provide us with opportunities to go out on the wire without a net, testing our limits, pushing envelopes, and just being silly for the fun of it. This show starts at 7:30 pm at the Pilot Light in the Old City. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
Tuesday, October 20 — Einstein Simplified Comedy Improv Show (Facebook event page)
The guys and gals of Einstein Simplified have been delighting audiences in Knoxville and around the southeast for 20+ years. They’ll be a crowd favorite at the Scruffy City Comedy Festival. And, in advance of the festival, the Einstein Simplified troupe are kicking off some of their weekly shows in the coming weeks with a guest stand-up comedian. And, guess who gets to have that honor this week? No. Me! This show starts at 8:15 pm at Scruffy City Hall on Market Square. There is no cover charge.
Monday, October 26 — QED Experimental Comedy Lab — “
Welcome to the Punderdome” “Gluttons for Pun-ishment” (Facebook event page)
This week I get to return to hosting duties for an episode of QED with a show I’ve suggested that pits comedians in a battle of the wits to create puns based on a variety of oddball topics I assign. Teams of comedians will be brought to the stage to compete until only one comedian stands above the others as the King or Queen of Puns. This show starts at 7:30 pm at the Pilot Light in the Old City. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
EDIT/UPDATE: We changed this week’s show name after receiving a friendly cease and desist letter from some folks who appear to have trademarked the name we originally used. So, that’s a QED first.
Thursday, October 29 — Downtown Randall Brown’s Halloween Spooktacular (Facebook event page)
Did you know that Paul Lynde once hosted a Halloween-themed television variety special starring Florence Henderson, Donnie and Marie Osmond, and KISS? No? Well, fear not, because Downtown Randall Brown has created a night of entertainment to pay tribute such a lunatic idea. The night will feature musical performances from Knoxville favorite’s Quartjar and Evil Twin, as well as comedy from me and Tyler Sonnichsen. Ricky Moon will be the emcee performing as the ghost of Paul Lynde. I really can’t think of a more complete description of the night than “the ghost of Paul Lynde.” Cover is a measly $3 and the show starts at 9 pm at Scruffy City Hall on Market Square.
So, that’s a pretty busy wrap up to October. I hope you’ll be able to join me for one or more of these bits of fun, laughter, and occasional ghosts. Follow me on Twitter for more updates. You can also visit my schedule page for updates on these or other performances.
