Honored to Be Honorable Mention

Honored to Be Honorable Mention

Shane Rhyne was named a runner-up in the 2016 Knoxville Mercury readers polls of Top Knoxville comedians. This year's winner was Trae "The Liberal Redneck" Crowder.

I want to send out a great big thank you to the readers of the Knoxville Mercury who voted me in as a runner-up for Knoxville’s top comedian in the 2016 Top Knox readers’ poll. I wish I could say I voted along with you in that decision, but like most of Knoxville, I cast my ballot for my friend Trae Crowder who is having a phenomenal year hitting the national comedy scene.

But, I am humbled to be included in such very good company as Trae, comedy veteran and author Alex Stokes, and 2015’s Top Comedian Jeff Blank.

This Thing Called Life: Remembering Prince

This Thing Called Life: Remembering Prince

So, Prince died. That’s not cool at all. Not one bit.

I don’t think that it is any exaggeration at all to say he was to my generation (Gen X) what Elvis was to the Baby Boomers. His death, as sudden and shocking as Presley’s own, left me and millions of fans reeling yesterday. I posted a few remembrances over on Facebook and the local weekly paper, The Knoxville Mercury, kindly asked if one of my posts could be included on their blog collecting local writers’ thoughts and memories of Prince.

You can read the whole thing here on the Mercury site. I will add, for the sake of keeping this somewhat connected to comedy that memories number 2, 3, and 5, became the premises for jokes and stories I have been telling on stage for the past couple of years in one form or another. So, they actually had a role in making new memories of their own. But that’s life. A funny word, “life,”…

I’m a Runner Up!

I’m a Runner Up!

Hey, there.

I’d like to offer a belated but grateful thanks for any of you who voted for me in the Knoxville Mercury Top Knox readers’ poll this year for Knoxville’s Top Comedian. I was honored to see that I somehow made the list of runners up this year, when I didn’t even think I’d been nominated.

Also, congratulations to my friend Jeff Blank on a well-deserved victory and to my friends Victor Agreda, Jr., and Alex Stokes for also being named runners up.

The truth is, there are several more names that should be on that list as the Scruffy City has a great pool of talent to choose from. And, don’t forget, you can see talented locals and comics from around the country in downtown Knoxville this November 13-15 as part of the 2nd Annual Scruffy City Comedy Festival (tickets available now).
